Private Inventors

The patent system is expensive, and complex for the uninitiated. We understand that these are the difficulties faced by private inventors who have usually come up with a single invention and are wondering how they might obtain some sort of legal protection.  We can assist private inventors by providing an initial consultation (of about half an hour) free of charge to provide some explanation as to the procedures and costs involved and an indication as to the likelihood of obtaining legal protection for their invention.

Although all work at Elkington and Fife LLP is overseen by a partner, we have a number of assistants (trainee patent attorneys) and we can offer experienced assistants to private inventors for the majority of the work in order to minimise costs.

We are also able to provide an inventors’ pack free of charge on request which answers some common questions regarding the legal protection of inventions.
