Richard has extensive experience in both contentious and non-contentious patent matters, particularly in the pharmaceutical sector. He regularly represents clients in opposition and appeal proceedings before the European Patent Office and frequently appears before the Boards of Appeal. Richard routinely acts for clients challenging commercially significant patents and has also supported clients and litigation teams in national patent proceedings.

Alongside his contentious practice, Richard manages a substantial international prosecution portfolio. He has extensive experience drafting and prosecuting patent applications worldwide, including applications directed to broad chemical genera, selections, stereoisomers, combinations, polymorphs, salts and processes. Richard also advises on infringement and validity and works closely with clients to develop IP strategies aligned with their commercial objectives.

Richard is recognised by leading industry directories for his patent expertise. He has been named a Patent Star by Managing IP’s IP STARS, and The Legal 500 has highlighted his experience in European opposition and appeal proceedings.

Richard joined Elkington + Fife in 2005, qualified as a Chartered Patent Attorney in 2008 and as a European Patent Attorney in 2010, and joined the partnership in 2012.
